Working on the ‘Welcome Home’ script with creative team

In addition to producing her own creative works Catie has written a number of projects for commission for specific groups and individuals. Perhaps you have an idea in mind but don’t know how to get it on stage. Or you have a performance but need help with creating the dialogue. From adaptations to formatting mere ideas to play format, Catie can help. The following are some case studies of commissioned projects she done in the past.

CASE STUDIES:

The Space Between My Head and My Body
for Gin in the Tea Theatre Company
In the winter of 2007 I was recommended by playwright Dan Rebellato to the newly formed Gin in the Tea Theatre Company as a possible script writer for a show they wanted to bring to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.  They wanted the play loosely based on Oliver Sachs book, ‘The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat’ while also exploring gender identities and working with an all female company (except for the two male actors).  I was able to create five base ideas for work-shopping over a number of months and ended up combining two of the ideas into the final product.

The play premiered in London at Theatre 503 and then transferred to the Baby Belly 3 in Edinburgh.  We received wonderful reviews and now the play is published as a Fringe Favorite through Original Works Publishing.

Smoke & Pearls
for Lora Mander & Lucy Thatcher with Bagg Theatre Company
Director Lora Mander came to with a project that needed help.  She was working with a very talented actress and singer, Lucy Thatcher, who wanted to create a piece that would follow the life of fictional 1950’s cabaret singer Lita Lowe.  They had the basic story idea and the songs the wanted to incorporated but needed someone to write dialogue to connect the story together.  I worked with Lora and Lucy for about a month to help create a script that was used at the performance at the Canal Cafe in Summer 2009

Poe-sessed
for New Edgecliff Theatre’s annual Sweet Suspense Radio Drama
As part of my residency at New Edgecliff Theatre, I was asked to write the annual radio drama which NET uses as a fundraiser every Halloween.  This year the idea was to adapt two Edgar Allen Poe stories for the radio drama, ‘The Oval Portrait’ and ‘The Mask of the Red Death’. Though my background does not include radio dramas, I am always up for a challenge.  Working with a local director, Bob Allen and sound effects master Mike Martini, I have created two pieces that reflect both the haunting originality of Poe with my own creative flair.  This project got me thinking in a different mind set as I’m used to writing to ‘show not tell’ and radio drama is certainly all about speaking the action.  It has been a truly enjoyable project to be part of.

Welcome Home
For Nikki Booker, Starfire U and the Emery Theatre: A Reqium project
In the Summer of 2011 I was approached by Senior Starfire U student Nikki Booker who, for her Capstone project wanted to adapt the book ‘Waddie Welcome and the Beloved Community’ for stage. With a team of other creatives, I was able to work with the authors of the book, visit Savannah, GA to do on-site research and write a one act play that fit both the original book, the true story and Ms. Booker’s vision for the project. The play opened at the Historic Emery theatre as the first play in over 25 years to an audience of over 400 people with a cast of 18. Though not usually in my scope of works, I directed this play as well and was happy to have worked on a project that was so closely linked to the Cincinnati Community and the Savannah one. This project is currently being reworked to become a traveling educational show.
